Raikokes First Eruption in 95 Years Captured by NASA Astronauts

Image credit: NASA Unlike some of its perpetually active neighbors on the Kamchatka Peninsula, Raikoke Volcano on the Kuril Islands rarely erupts. The small, oval-shaped island most recently exploded in 1924 and in 1778. The dormant period ended around 4:00 a.m. local time on June 22, 2019, when a vast plume of ash and volcanic gases shot up from its 700-meter-wide crater. The dramatic event was captured from space by astronauts aboard the International Space Station. In the image above we see the volcanic plume rising in a narrow column and then spreading out in a part of the plume known as the ‘umbrella region’. That is the area where the density of the plume and the surrounding air equalize …

Children at the border: the crisis that America wasn’t prepared for

Despite fears stoked by Trump, fewer migrants are arriving at the border than in past years but most are now children headed to facilities that are ill-equipped to receive them At a border patrol processing facility in McAllen, Texas on 11 June, a group of lawyers and doctors met a 17-year-old girl from Guatemala. She was in a wheelchair and she held her tiny one-month-old daughter, who was swaddled in a gray sweatshirt so dirty it was almost black. The mother said she had an emergency C-section in Mexico at eight months pregnant. She was in so much pain she couldnt stand, she said, yet US Customs and Border Patrol (CBP), the agency in charge of screening and processing migrants, …

This “Floating Island” Pool Float Will Let You Lounge With Your Whole Crew

Courtesy Of Sam’s Club Sam’s Club’s Tropical Tahiti Floating Island Will Put Your Swan Float To Shame By Lizzy Rosenberg 11 hours ago Any ocean princess, lake monster, or pool party goddess out there is somewhat aware of the fact that pool floats are are a fundamental aspect of summer fun. And since swans, wine glasses, and doughnuts are  last year, it’s definitely time to start thinking outside the box. Luckily, Sam’s Club’s Tropical Tahiti Floating Island is now available, and it will — without a doubt — put that swan float to shame. It’s kind of incredible, if you ask me. Returning to Sam’s Club shelves for the second year in a row (in a bunch of new color options!) …

What happened when my flight was invaded by ants

Little did I know that after tweeting about my nine-hour saga, the story would go viral around the world and I would find myself embroiled in a freedom of press issue Thats odd, I thought when a large, fat ant strolled across my pillow as the plane lined up for take-off from Venice to Newark last week. The flight, as I would discover shortly into the nine-hour journey, was infested. Midair, I tweeted about the saga, partly to take my mind off the creepy crawlers, but mostly for the benefit of my sisters, who would, like all good siblings, inevitably find great mirth in my absurd predicament. Little did I know that, by the time we landed, a TV crew …

The Best Bachelorette Recap Youll Ever Read: I Still Know Nothing About Latvia Betches

Sponsored by SkinnyPop This week on The Bachelorette, we’re welcomed back to Latvia, where apparently the men heard “European adventure” and thought “yes, I must pack my spring scarf.” Never mind that production chose to showcase the country’s beauty with drab shots of gnarled trees limbs and dead grass that could easily have been filmed in upstate New York in the dead of winter, but sure, bring out those pastels, boys! Tbh I’d rather see an hour of footage that includes these scarves than watch one more minute of Hannah and Chris Harrison’s impromptu therapy session like we endured last week. And we did ENDURE if the twitch that I developed in my left eye is any indication. Post-nude bungee …

NASAs Planet-Hunting TESS Has Discovered Its Smallest Exoplanet Yet

NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, otherwise known as TESS, has discovered its smallest exoplanet yet. Known as L 98-59b, the planet is about 80 percent of Earth’s size. Bigger than Mars but slightly smaller than Venus. The world orbits an M-class star about one-third the mass of our Sun, and it has siblings. The two other planets, L 98-59c and L 98-59d, are respectively around 1.4 and 1.6 times bigger than Earth.  The discovery is reported in The Astronomical Journal. The Truth About Being A Strong Person

By Noel Alva By Noel Alva A strong person is brave enough to show their emotions and feel little to no shame for it. This does not mean being overly emotional and dramatic for attention. They don’t mope around with a frown on their face, they don’t take out their issues on other people as if it’s everyone else’s fault. A strong person feels like a burden on other people, but recognizes that if a friend leaves in the midst of hardship, they probably weren’t a true friend anyway. A strong person wears their heart on their sleeve and it is the single thing that makes them the most authentic person you will meet. A strong person cries because they …

YouTube Is Giving You More Control Over Video Recommendations

YouTube has been at the center of a long series of scandals in recent years, many concerning one of its main features: the recommendation algorithm. The software encourages users to watch one video after another, which are served up on a menu labeled “Up Next.” Dubbed the “great radicalizer,” the algorithm has been accused by critics of guiding people down a rabbit hole of increasingly extreme content. To address the issue, YouTube began reducing the number of times it recommended things like conspiracy theories and bogus miracle cures. Now, the company wants to give more control over the algorithm to its users. Starting Wednesday, you can block specific channels from appearing in your YouTube recommendations, the company announced in a …

Readers’ guide to the second Democratic debate

(CNN)Tonight, round two of the first Democratic debates gets underway, with another slate of 10 candidates facing off in Miami. “The fact of the matter is when I was vice president I was able to put together an overwhelming bipartisan support — Democrats and Republicans — to provide significant amounts of money in direct return for these countries dealing with the corrupt police systems, dealing with their school systems, dealing with the opportunities,” Biden said in May. He also says he would invest smarter in border security but is against President Donald Trump’s border wall. Climate change Biden recently issued a policy proposal to reach net-zero emissions by 2050 through executive action. His plan includes holding fossil fuel companies accountable, …
