(CNN)Clifton Blackwell, the Milwaukee man accused of throwing acid last week on a US citizen born in Peru, is being charged in Wisconsin circuit court with a hate crime, according to a criminal complaint. The biggest source of microplastics in California coastal waters? Car tires

(CNN)Cars may be doing more damage to our environment than we realized. Microplastics have been found in the stomachs of a number of marine organisms, and chemical additives from microplastics can also bleed out into the ocean, according to the NOAA. It is also possible that contaminants from the water may adhere to microplastics. The NOAA has not yet been determined if these contaminants transfer through the food chain. The San Francisco Estuary Institute teamed up with the 5 Gyres Institute to complete a three-year study in what they claim is the first comprehensive regional study of microplastic pollution. The study found that more than 7 trillion pieces of microplastics wash into the San Francisco Bay each year, with much …

Why the heat index matters more than the temperature in this heat wave

(CNN)Checking the temperature reading during this weekend’s heat wave won’t tell the whole sweltering story. It’s going to feel a lot hotter. So, Washington — with a predicted temperature Saturday of 100 degrees Fahrenheit and relative humidity of 73% — can expect it to feel like 111 degrees, she said. And Boston’s forecast high temperature of 97 degrees, with relative humidity of 71%, will make it feel like 105. And that’s not even in the sun. “When we, as meteorologists, forecast the high temperatures or the heat index, that is in the shade,” Brink said. “The sun definitely makes it worse.” In “direct sunlight, the heat index value can be increased by up to 15 degrees Fahrenheit,” according to the …
